Xabi Alonso took charge of Bayer Leverkusen last season, and he has been doing wonders at the club
Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella has revealed some key details about Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, calling him a ‘perfectionist’, Soccernet.ng reports.
Alonso took charge of Bayer Leverkusen last season after the club sacked Gerardo Seoane following a poor run of results. The former Spain international helped the club to a sixth-place finish in the German Bundesliga.
This season, Die Werkself have hit a whole new level, as they are the only club yet to lose a game in Europe’s top five leagues. Under the tutelage of Alonso, the club have dominated the Bundesliga, sitting at the summit of the league, eight points above giants Bayern Munich.
Alonso’s performance has caught the eyes of some top European clubs, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona heavily linked with a move. Also, Alonso has been touted as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement when he leaves Liverpool at the end of the season.
Super Eagles star Tella, who just joined Bayer Leverkusen this season and has played a vital role in the club’s success story, has been impressed by Alonso, and he has given a few details on how it has been working with the Spanish tactician.
“Yes, I think he(Alonso) doesn’t get too carried away. He doesn’t think about the future. He doesn’t think too far in the future. He only thinks about the next game and the next training session and how to improve,” Tella said in a Bundesliga interview.
“If we won a game 3-0, he will look at why we didn’t win 4-0. He always wants to be the best and a perfectionist. That is why we strive to be the best, as a team, because he brings it out of us as well.”
With Bayer Leverkusen’s eight-point lead at the summit of the Bundesliga, they look poised to win their first-ever league title. However, it is unlikely that the former Real Madrid star will remain at the club next season.
