AFCON 2023: “We are wary of their quality” South Africa boss Hugo Broos says ahead of semi-final clash against Nigeria

Nigeria have been impressive at the AFCON, and Hugo Broos is wary of the threat that they possess

South Africa coach Hugo Broos has stated that he is wary of the threat that the Super Eagles possess ahead of their crucial semi-final clash in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng.

South Africa and Nigeria rekindle their rivalry this Wednesday in a winner-takes-all semi-final clash. Both countries have enjoyed a somewhat similar progression up till this point, as they have only conceded once since the start of the 2023 AFCON.

However, Nigeria have been a bit better, as they have won all but one of the games at the AFCON despite facing strong opponents like Cameroon and Ivory Coast.

They have also scored in all their games, unlike South Africa, who have scored in only two of their five games.

Ahead of the clash between South Africa and Nigeria, Bafana Bafana boss Broos has stated that he is wary of the Super Eagles’ threat, but they are making plans to curtail their advances.

“Nigeria are a team who have become better and better with every game at this Afcon,” Broos said per Supersport.

“It’s a good team and a very good side with a few good players like the one, what’s his name? Look … (Ademola Lookman). The one who scored the goal.

“He is a very good player. We have to analyse them a little bit more now that we know we are playing against them in the semifinals.

“We will see how we can use the weaknesses in this team and be aware of the qualities of this team. It’s going to be a little bit special because, in a few months, we are playing in the World Cup qualifiers. So, it can be a test for the both of us.”

The Bafana Bafana have always proved to be a tough nut to crack for Nigeria, and at this AFCON- which has had many surprises- the Super Eagles would have to work hard to earn a win.
