Burundi 0-1 Nigeria: Akeroromowei’s penalty pushes Falconets closer to FIFA U20 World Cup in Colombia

The young Nigerian ladies are the most successful African nation at the World Cup, and they took another step closer to appearing again at the Mundial

Nigeria’s U-20 national team edged to a narrow 1-0 win over Burundi at the Azam Stadium in Dar es Salaam to claim a first-leg advantage in the race for the 2024 FIFA U20 World Cup in Colombia, Soccernet.ng reports.

Janet Akeroromowei netted the game’s only goal to hand the Falconets a crucial win in the fourth-round tie against the East Africans.

With a World Cup ticket on the line, the Falconets were not in the mood for compromise, and Akeroromowei expertly converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time to give the young Nigerian ladies the win they deserved.

Both teams will meet again in Abuja in six days, with the Falconets needing to avoid defeat to book their spot at Colombia 2024.

Nigeria have appeared at every edition of the U20 World Cup, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014.

Four teams will represent Africa at the World Cup.

In another fourth-round tie, Morocco placed one foot in the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Ethiopia. They will need to protect that lead when they travel to Addis Ababa next weekend.

Earlier on Saturday, Ghana U20 girls did their World Cup hopes a universe of good as they secured a 2-0 win over Senegal away from home.

On Friday, Cameroon’s u20 team soared to a thrilling 4-2 victory over Egypt and will look to complete the job on home soil in the second leg.

  • Kindly note that Burundi is a Central African country like Rwanda, though both countries, which were previously one, have stronger economic ties with & also share borders with East African countries too.
