The three-time former champions fought out a tough victory over tournament hosts to boost their chances of making it to the next round
After leading the Super Eagles to a historic victory over hosts Cote d’Ivoire, head coach Jose Peseiro has turned his attention to Nigeria’s next match against Guinea-Bissau, Soccernet.ng reports.
On Thursday, Peseiro devised a tactical masterclass that propelled the Super Eagles to their first win at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
William Troost-Ekong scored a second-half penalty as Nigeria claimed a memorable 1-0 victory over Cote d’Ivoire to cap a smash-and-grab performance for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria will round up their group stage campaign with a meeting against Guinea-Bissau on Monday.
The Bissauguineans have never won a game at the AFCON and have already fallen to defeats at the hands of Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.
Still, Nigeria need to get past the euphoria of their first-ever win on Ivorian soil and focus on how to get all three points against Guinea-Bissau.
Peseiro is pleased with the Super Eagles for working according to his plans against the Ivorians.
The Portuguese tactician has, however, set his priority on the next task at hand – beating Guinea-Bissau.
The former Porto boss is keen to get the Super Eagles’ training, rest, and nutrition right to get the best out of the players on Monday.
On his Twitter account, Peseiro wrote: “Yesterday we won an excellent match against Côte d’Ivoire, supported by a strategic plan that was impeccably executed, by the quality, intelligence, determination and mutual help of our boys.
“It’s up to us to keep our FOCUS on training, rest, and nutrition in order to beat Guinea Bissau.”
The Super Eagles have met Guinea-Bissau three times over the past two years, winning two games and losing one.
However, Nigeria’s triumph over Ivory Coast is the Super Eagles’ first win in their last five matches across all competitions.
