AFCON 2023: Union SG-linked Nwabali stays humble despite taking Nigeria goalkeeping position from Uzoho

Stanley Nwabali has been made the first choice of the Super Eagles so far in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, establishing his confidence against Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Ivory Coast so far

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, humbly downplays the idea of being Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, emphasising his focus on the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Chippa United goaltender, who has recently been linked with a move to Royale Union SG, expressed his surprise at receiving the call-up to the Eagles camp but remains dedicated to helping Nigeria secure victory in the AFCON.

Nwabali, who recently played a pivotal role in the match against Guinea-Bissau, dismissed any feelings of pressure associated with being considered the top goalkeeper. He emphasised his commitment to contributing to the team with his unique qualities.

“I’m not under pressure and I still not see myself as number one goalkeeper. I only had the opportunity and I just want to play and give my best to the team.

“One year ago, I did not even know I will got the National team call up and even till now I don’t believe I’m going to be here.” he said, in an interview witnessed by Soccernet.ng.

Reflecting on an on-field disagreement with teammate Victor Osimhen during the Guinea-Bissau match, Nwabali stated that such incidents are normal in football and ultimately contribute to the team’s improvement.

He remains unfazed about individual goal-scoring concerns, stressing that the primary focus is on securing three points, and he is delighted that the team has successfully qualified for the next stage of the competition.

“Arguments happen in football, and all for the team as we need to score more goals. When you have a player like Osimhen, goals will come. I’m not worried about goals; I’m only worried about the three points, and now we qualified.” he added.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be tackling Cameroon in their Round of 16 clash, and this is anticipated to be a difficult clash for both sides.
