AFCON 2023: “The target is to win the trophy”- Ex-Leicester City star reveals why Super Eagles can win a fourth title

The Super Eagles will be looking to win a fourth crown in Cote d’Ivoire, and Musa has revealed why he is confident ahead of the AFCON

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has stated that Nigeria are favorites to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast because of their quality, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria won their last AFCON in 2013, but they will be looking to claim a fourth title in Cote d’Ivoire later this month. Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro invited 25 players for the competition. The list contains top players like Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi, Alex Iwobi, and the CAF Player of The Year, Victor Osimhen.

Going into the AFCON, Nigeria have won just one of their last five games. Still, former Leicester City man Musa believes the Super Eagles have the quality to beat the rest of Africa to the trophy.

“We’ve been talking to each other that this is the time for us to go out there and shine. With the players in the 25-man squad, you can’t say we cannot win it when you hear the names,” Musa told NFF TV.

“But in football, anything can happen, but we have the confidence because the target we have is to win the AFCON.”

The Super Eagles will begin their AFCON journey on January 14 with a game against Equatorial Guinea. Then, they play Cote d’Ivoire on January 18 before playing Guinea-Bissau four days later in their final group stage game.
