Troost-Ekong missed Nigeria’s last group-stage fixture against Guinea-Bissau, but they still managed to get all three points
Super Eagles assistant captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed that his injury is not a serious one, and he should be fit to play in the round of 16, Soccernet.ng reports.
Troost-Ekong featured for Nigeria in their first two games in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and he led by example as he scored the winner in the last game against Cote d’Ivoire.
However, just hours before the game against Guinea-Bissau, Troost-Ekong was pictured with a bag of ice strapped to his knee. Eventually, he did not start for the Super Eagles as Kenneth Omerup took his place.
There were talks that the former Watford man would miss Nigeria’s remaining games at the AFCON, but the 30-year-old central defender has put those talks to bed.
“I’m not out of the tournament; I’m getting better, I am looking to return to training in two days,” Troost-Ekong told Oga Nla Media.
Troost-Ekong’s absence was not felt much as Nigeria picked up a 1-0 win against the Djurtus. Omeruo, who stood in as the captain, was great.
Nigeria will know their round of 16 opponents once the final round of games is completed.
