AFCON 2023: “Nigeria has a chance”- Chelsea legend Drogba tips Super Eagles to do well

Nigeria has one of the best squads at the AFCON, and Drogba believes that they will do well but not at the detriment of his country

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has tipped Nigeria to do well at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but not at the detriment of Cote d’Ivoire, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles will be looking to win a fourth AFCON title in Ivory Coast in the next three weeks. Nigeria is blessed with many quality players, and they are the most expensive in the competition.

Despite the quality inherent in the Super Eagles squad, there were fears about their trophy credentials because of their poor form before the tournament began.

The Jose Peseiro-tutored side started the AFCON on a bad note, as they picked just one point from their opening game against Equatorial Guinea- A fixture that was supposed to be an easy one.

However, they picked up in their second game against Ivory Coast, digging deep to win 1-0 against the hosts.

After the game against the Elephants, Chelsea legend Drogba was queried about his expectations for Nigeria at the AFCON, and he was quite optimistic.

“They(Nigeria) can go far, but we(Cote d’Ivoire) have to finish in front of them. It’s the celebration of football. Of course, I want Ivory Coast to win, but the best team has to win, but if it’s Nigeria, fair to them and well done to them,” Drogba said per Official54fx.

Nigeria play their final group stage game against Guinea-Bissau on Monday, and a victory for them would ensure that they finish at the summit of Group A.

  • If Equatorial Guinea defeats Ivory Cross, and Nigeria doesn't win Guinea Bissau by more goal margins, then Equatorial Guinea will definitely remain on top of the group.
