The Super Eagles of Nigeria will kick their AFCON campaign off when they take on Equatorial Guinea at the Stade Olympique Allassane Ouattara in Ivory Coast tomorrow.
Ahead of the clash between two solid African football nations, Soccernet.ng looks into five Nigerian players that can give the Super Eagles an edge over their opponents.
1. Victor Osimhen
The CAF Player of the Year award winner scored thirty-one goals in all competitions last season with his club side, Napoli, winning the Serie A title for the club for the first time in over three decades.
The 25-year-old scored the most goals in the AFCON qualifiers and poses the strongest threat to the Equatorial Guinea defence, and it’ll be interesting to see how they plan to stop him. If any player can make a difference for Nigeria, it is Victor Osimhen.
2. Alex Iwobi
The ex-Arsenal midfielder has been enjoying life under Marco Silva and has had a hand in four Fulham goals this season. Burdened with the responsibility of creating chances for the attackers up front, Iwobi has the ability to open the opposition defence with timely passes and will be one to watch tomorrow.
3. Ademola Lookman
Comfortable playing any position across the front line, the 26-year-old has had a hand in ten goals for Gian Piero Gasperini’s men and will be influential as Nigeria kick off their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea.
4. Frank Onyeka
Set to fill the big shoes of Wilfred Ndidi as the Leicester City midfielder is out of action due to an injury. Onyeka will be tasked with breaking up the attack of the opposition, winning the ball back and making recoveries.
The Brentford man is set to orchestrate the midfield and keep things ticking, and his performance will play a crucial part in how Nigeria perform tomorrow.
5. Samuel Chukwueze
The left footed right-winger is yet to pin down a starting spot for his new club side, A.C. Milan, and has scored one goal so far.
However, his pace, trickery, flair, and cut back will cause the Equatorial Guinea defence all sorts of headaches, giving the Super Eagles an added advantage with him on the flank.
