‘I want to win it’– Super Eagles star sends message to Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, others ahead of AFCON 2023

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been seeded in the same Group with Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau in the next AFCON tournament

Former Watford FC defender, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his determination to secure victory in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria find themselves in Group B alongside Cote d’Ivoire—the tournament hosts—Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau for the imminent AFCON campaign.

Despite strong competition from teams like Senegal, Egypt, and Morocco, Troost-Ekong remains resolute in his ambition to claim the championship.

While not recently featuring for Jose Peseiro’s squad in the last four games, concerns have arisen regarding his inclusion in the upcoming tournament.

Nevertheless, the PAOK defender, surprised by his omission, eagerly awaits the squad list and emphasises AFCON as one of the trophies he aspires to win in his career.

“Yeah, I’m hundred percent behind this slogan, you know I’ve been in the team since 2015 and I’ve played with the players who were part of the the team that won it.

“Over the years I’ve become one of the older players, and I want to leave my legacy as well, and I want to win the title. Having the bronze medal from the Olympic and AFCON is great, and something special for me, but I want to win it.” Troost-Ekong stated in an interview with Soccernet.ng’s Managing Editor, Lolade Adewuyi.

“It’s been a great pleasure to Captain the team so many times, so to be part of the team that won the AFCON is on my list and one of my dreams as a kid, and I will keep fighting for it. And like you said, we have the talent, so why not, let’s do it again” he added.

The AFCON tournament is set to commence in January, and prior to that, the Super Eagles will engage in a preparatory tournament in Saudi Arabia.
