The Nigeria international has faced harsh criticisms in Scotland for his performances since joining the Light Blues in the summer
Glasgow Rangers boss Philippe Clement has backed Cyriel Dessers to keep improving and prove his worth to the Scottish giants, Soccernet.ng reports.
After a curvy-turvy start to life at the Ibrox, Dessers has begun to win more Rangers fans to his corner with his recent displays.
After joining Rangers from Serie A side Cremonese in the summer, Dessere scored on both his UEFA Champions League debut and Scottish League Cup debut for the club.
However, the Super Eagles forward faced harsh criticism after scoring just once in the league in his first two months in Scotland.
Things have gone better for Dessers in recent weeks, though, as the Nigerian forward has scored four goals in his last eight Premiership games.
The former KRC Genk star also netted a crucial goal in Rangers’ excellent 3-2 win at Real Betis, which secured a knockout spot in the Europa League.
The 29-year-old forward was also in the starting lineup for the League Cup final at the weekend to help Rangers beat Aberdeen and claim their first title of the season.
Gers boss Clement is pleased to see Dessers putting in the effort to improve on the pitch.
And despite not ruling out bringing in attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window, the Belgian manager is keen on giving Dessers more time to fully come to his own at Ibrox.
“I don’t look at transfer windows from the past. My job is to get the best out of the players that are there,” Clement says, as per Rangers Review.
“Cyriel Dessers is improving; he scored last weekend and also on Thursday against Betis. It is my job to make choices, together with a board, of what we should do in January to strengthen the core.
“I also don’t think that after three months you can say with certainty that a player is good enough or not.
“So let’s work very hard with those players. And then it is up to them to show that they are worth it.”
Dessers could be away with Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in January, where the Super Eagles will seek to claim a fourth continental crown and their first since 2013.
