CAF Awards: Osimhen beats Liverpool’s Salah and PSG’s Hakimi to POTY crown

Osimhen had a remarkable year, and he has been rewarded for his efforts

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has beaten Liverpool forward Mohammed Salah and PSG star Achraf Hakimi to the 2023 CAF Player of The Year Award, Soccernet.ng reports.

Osimhen has been one of the best players from the continent in recent years. The Nigerian striker was the talisman for Napoli in the run-up to their Serie A triumph.

He scored 26 goals in the Serie A to become the first African to win the Capocannoniere. He also broke Samuel Eto’o and George Weah’s longstanding goalscoring records in the Serie A.

In the Champions League, he also registered five goals to help the Partenopeans to their first quarterfinal finish in the UEFA Champions League.

Following his superb campaign, he has gotten nominations for the FIFA Best Awards and the Ballon d’Or. He also made CAF’s shortlist for the 2023 Awards alongside Salah and Hakimi.

The CAF event took place in Marrakech on Monday, and it had in attendance some big names in African Football history like Rigobert Song, El Hadji Diouf.

Before this year, the last Nigerian to win the award was Nwankwo Kanu in 1999, but Osimhen matched the former Arsenal man’s record as he won the award.

The Napoli star beat Salah and Hakimi to win the award in Marrakech. To add to his bliss, Osimhen was also nominated in CAF Team of The Year.
