Zimbabwe vs Nigeria: Did Coach Brito’s strong words translate into action?

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification tie against the Warriors of Zimbabwe

The Warriors of Zimbabwe secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Huye Stadium during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification match, Soccernet.ng reports.

Before the match, head coach Baltemor Brito had emphasized his team’s intent not to show deference to Peseiro’s men and to come out strong in the clash.

Throughout the game, the Zimbabwean side exerted consistent pressure on Nigeria. Walter Musona’s stunning free-kick provided the hosts with a first-half lead before Kelechi Iheanacho leveled the scoreline after numerous attempts from the Nigerian side.

Brito had earlier declared the Warriors’ aim to target victory, and their performance showcased their intent.

“At this level, all opponents play to win. Even we will play for a win against Nigeria,” Brito stated. “They will come strong, but we will come strong too. We are here to face them.”

Although Nigeria maintained 52% ball possession and dominated the attack with more dangerous attempts, Zimbabwe had their chances with three off-goal attempts and one on-goal.

This result marks Zimbabwe’s emergence as a potential contender for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.

It also represents the second consecutive draw against Nigeria since 2019, a result that leaves Nigeria disappointed in their quest to secure a World Cup spot.
