“We will wait and see” – Alonso unfazed about Boniface’s possible AFCON departure

Victor Boniface has been in fine form for Bayer 04 Leverkusen since joining from Union Saint-Gilloise last summer.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen head coach, Xabi Alonso has maintained that he is not disturbed about Victor Boniface’s potential departure due to the 2024 AFCON tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

Boniface, 22, has been in fine form for his club side since his twenty-two million euro move, carting away the rookie of the month award three consecutive times, and could be involved with the Super Eagles in January.

With Taiwo Awoniyi injured, it is looking increasingly likely that Boniface will be pivotal for Jose Peseiro in Ivory Coast in a bid win the competition after last tasting victory in 2013.

Alonso, aware of this possibility, remains relaxed and is optimistic about what the future holds, should Boniface get called up, claiming Patrik Schick more than capable to hold the forte while the Nigerian is on international duty.

“The tournament runs from January 13th to February 11th. We wait and see. Patrik is in a good mood, and he is strong, and with him, we are in no hurry,” the Spaniard said in quotes revealed by Sports Bild.

Schick, 27, has been absent from action for Die Werkself due to an injury, but returned to training this week, and his return could prove timely with Boniface most likely going away to represent Nigeria.

Leverkusen currently occupy top spot in the German Bundesliga, winning eleven games and drawing just one.
