The number-one citizen of the ‘Heartbeat of the Nation‘ has not hidden his joy following Jose Peseiro’s latest national team decision
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has extended his congratulations to Bendel Insurance goalkeeper Amas Obasogie for earning a spot in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, Soccernet.ng reports.
Obasogie was not in the 23-man roster of players that Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro invited for the November qualifiers.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper was, however, handed his first national team call-up following the withdrawal of Udinese goalie Maduka Okoye.
He becomes the first Bendel Insurance player to be called for national team duties since the turn of the millennium.
In a statement made available to the press, Governor Obaseki was delighted with Obasogie’s invitation, stating,
“I heartily congratulate our own Bendel Insurance Goalkeeper, Amas Obasogie, on his call-up to the national team, the Super Eagles, for the FIFA World Cup Qualifier games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.”
Recognizing Obasogie’s outstanding qualities, the governor highlighted his agility, resilience, and exceptional command in the air.
Obasogie stands out as one of the top shot-stoppers in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), boasting an impressive record of six clean sheets in seven matches this season. His remarkable performance contributed to Bendel Insurance’s remarkable 26-game unbeaten streak last season.
Governor Obaseki praised Obasogie’s consistency, noting,
“He has continued to give an excellent account of himself, showcasing his prowess, exceptional talent, and the indomitable Edo spirit, putting the State on the global map for good.”
Expressing pride in the goalkeeper’s accomplishments, Obaseki concluded by saying,
“We are proud of his accomplishments and genius and wish him success in this new and exciting chapter of his football career.
“We are confident that he will continue to shine and bring more laurels and glory to the State and Nigeria.”
Obasogie will join Omonia Nicosia’s Francis Uzoho and Enyimba’s Olorunleke Ojo to vie for a starting role in the Super Eagles squad to face Lesotho.
While Uzoho will likely get the nod as Peseiro’s preferred choice, the former Golden Eaglets star is far from cementing his position as Nigeria’s undisputed number-one goalkeeper.
