The Nigeria international was the difference maker on Sunday as the José Ángel Herrera-led side claimed a historic win over their more illustrious rivals
Gift Monday was the star of the show, scoring two goals in three second-half minutes to power UDG Tenerife to a memorable 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Four Super Falcons stars featured in the encounter, with Esther Okoronkwo featuring alongside Monday in the home team’s lineup, while Rinsola Babajide came on for Okoronkwo after the break.
After scoring for Nigeria in both games against Ethiopia last month, Rasheedat Ajibade started on the bench for Atletico Madrid as they sought to make it 18 games without a defeat against Tenerife.
Monday, however, had other ideas, and shortly after the halftime break, the youngster fired Tensrife in front with a strong run and smart left-footed finish.
Three minutes later, Monday made it two-nil to the home side as she broke past the visitors’ defence to slam the ball into the net for a goal similar to the first.
Atletico Madrid sent Ajibade onto the pitch a minute later as they sought an instant response.
Although Lucía Moral scored a consolation goal for the Madrid-based club, they could not muster the crucial second, allowing Tenerife to claim their first-ever win in 18 matchups between the two teams.
With the win, Tenerife rose to sixth on the league table, two spots below Atletico Madrid in fourth.
