Super Eagles return to Nigeria from Rwanda amidst frustration after draw with Zimbabwe in 2026 WCQ

The three-time African champions have kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign on a poor note after recording just two points from their first games

The Super Eagles returned to Nigeria from Rwanda early on Monday morning following a less-than-satisfactory 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Soccernet.ng reports.

Jose Peseiro’s men looked disappointed after failing to get the better of the Warriors in Butare on Sunday.

Walter Musona’s 26th-minute long-range free-kick handed Zimbabwe a first-half lead at the Huye Stadium.

Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho managed to level the scores for the Super Eagles in the second half but the team could not manage to find the winning goal.

The team’s official social media handle, X, announced their return.

The result leaves the Super Eagles winless after two outings in the qualifiers, prompting heightened scrutiny.

The three-time African champions failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and will need to win their next match to boost their chances.

Nigeria will host South Africa in June 2024 on matchday three of the World Cup qualifiers.

Before then, though, Nigeria will launch their bid for a fourth continental crown at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in January.

The Super Eagles have been placed in Group A at the AFCON alongside hosts Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau.
