The Super Eagles squad is filled with a lot of attacking talents, but Adams is hopeful that he can break-in
Montpellier striker Akor Adams has asserted his desire to play for the Super Eagles, but he maintains he is focused on his club at the moment, Soccernet reports.
Adams joined Montpellier during the summer transfer window from Lillestrom in a deal worth €4.5million, and he has proven his worth to the club. The 23-year-old striker has scored seven goals in nine Ligue 1 games for La Paillade, helping them to 11th place.
The Kogi-born star is second on Ligue 1 goalscorers’ chart, three goals behind PSG star Kylian Mbappe.
However, despite his rich form, Adams has been unable to break into the Super Eagles squad. Nigeria has some of the best strikers in the world, and getting in would be tough. Nonetheless, the Montpellier talisman is optimistic that he could get a place in the squad.
“National team is the dream of every boy who grew up in his country, and for me, it is also the same. But right now, I think the 2023 AFCON is still one, two months away,” Akor said in a presser ahead of Montpellier’s Ligue 1 game against PSG.
“The games in Montpellier are my biggest focus, and that will come when it comes, and then we’ll see with the club.”
Coach Jose Peseiro already has players like Victor Osimhen and Victor Boniface at his disposal.
However, there are other consistent lieutenants like Kelechi Iheanacho, Terem Moffi, Sadiq Umar, and Paul Onuachu. Adams would have to produce a superb run of games before he can make the team. With just two months left until the AFCON, it is unlikely that coach Peseiro will alter the current setup.
