“I give so much credit to Liverpool”- Nottingham Forest star Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi signed for Nottingham Forest during the 2022 Summer transfer window from Union Berlin and has established himself as a formidable striker for Steve Cooper’s men

Super Eagles star, Taiwo Awoniyi, has expressed his gratitude to his former club, Liverpool FC, for its role in his career development, Soccernet.ng reports.

Awoniyi’s journey started with Liverpool after an impressive performance at the national youth level, and the English club secured his signature for a fee of approximately £400,000. However, he was immediately loaned out to German side FSV Frankfurt.

During his time at Liverpool, Awoniyi went on multiple loan spells to clubs such as KAA Gent, NEC, Mainz 05, among others, without making a single appearance for Liverpool. He finally signed with Union Berlin in 2021, where he scored 15 goals in 31 matches.

This successful stint in Germany led to his return to England, where he joined Nottingham Forest and established himself as a formidable striker, scoring 13 goals since joining the Reds.

Awoniyi, as quoted by Liverpoolfc.com, revealed that his journey of being loaned out was tough but ultimately worthwhile.

“For me, going through all those clubs and all those stages, it was all with the aim of one day being back in the Premier League. I think in the end, it was worth it, but I can say it was a tough journey,” he said.

Further, he credited Liverpool as a family club and acknowledged their significant role in helping him mature into a dynamic Premier League striker.

The 26-year-old added: “Liverpool, I always say, is a family club. You develop as a person as well as a footballer, and I give so much credit to Liverpool for the way they looked after me all the time I was away. I’m forever grateful for that.

“It was an important period, really good for me, and it was a big reason I was able to develop into the player and the person I have become.”

Liverpool is set to face Nottingham Forest at Anfield stadium, with the Nigerian star returning from injury, aiming to contribute to his team’s success.
