Arsenal’s Nigeria-eligible shot-stopper reveals admiration for Manchester United legend

The 22-year-old goalkeeper watched a lot of Manchester United games while growing up, and that left a big mark on him

Nigeria-eligible goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed his admiration for former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, Soccernet reports.

Okonkwo is still trying to find his feet in football. The 22-year-old shot-stopper started his career at the Arsenal academy and has had to go on three different loan deals to get playing time.

The London-born goalkeeper has had stints at Crewe Alexandra, Sturm Graz, and, this season, Wrexham.

Okonkwo shared a little about himself in a recent podcast, Yours, Mine, Away. He spoke about how watching Manchester United as a child with his dad influenced him.

“My favourite-ever goalkeeper is Van der Sar. My dad supported Manchester United, and growing up, I used to watch him a lot,” Okonkwo said.

“So definitely, he’s my most favourite keeper watching in the Premier League. He was a solid goalkeeper.”

Okonkwo is currently on loan at Wrexham, but his contract at Arsenal will expire this season. He would have to produce impressive numbers if he wants to remain at the club.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper has played for England at youth level, but he is still eligible to play for the Super Eagles because he has Nigerian parents.

If Okonkwo can establish him, he could be a great asset to the national team because of the current scarcity of top goalkeepers.
