AFCON 2023: ‘This is coming home’- Ex-Chelsea star Mikel Obi makes bold prediction

The Super Eagles of Nigeria last won the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 2013, and are gearing up to secure their fourth AFCON trophy

Former Chelsea star and Super Eagles legend, John Mikel Obi, has expressed unwavering confidence ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw, scheduled for Thursday, Soccernet.ng reports.

During the AFCON qualifiers, Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, demonstrated their prowess by securing the top spot in Group A with 15 points. Their only defeat occurred at the hands of Guinea-Bissau at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Mikel, who will be part of the draw’s official proceedings, anticipates that the prestigious AFCON trophy will find its way back to Nigeria.

The former Stoke City midfielder led the Super Eagles to their third AFCON victory in 2013, triumphing over Burkina Faso in the final.

The former Super Eagles captain firmly believes that Nigeria can do the same by clinching their fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Ivory Coast.

In a video shared by CAFonline on social media, Mikel confidently stated that Nigeria will turn out victorious and take the trophy home to Nigeria.

“This is coming home. The tournament is coming home, AFCON 2023 is coming home to Nigeria.” he said.

As preparations intensify for the forthcoming tournament, Nigeria finds itself camping in Portugal during the International week.

The Super Eagles are gearing up for friendly matches against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique as they aim to secure their fourth AFCON title, bolstered by the conviction that their squad has the quality to bring the trophy home once again.
