Taiwo Awoniyi has picked up from where he left off last season for Nottingham Forest, notching 3 goals and 1 assist in 4 appearances so far this season
Nigeria’s Taiwo Awoniyi’s goals against Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League have been nominated for his club Nottingham Forest’s Goal of the Month award for August 2023, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 26-year-old opened his account for the season with Forest’s lone goal in their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on the opening week of the Premier League campaign.
Awoniyi struck the goal for Forest following some impressive work from Anthony Elanga in the build-up, but that strike proved nothing more than a consolation for the Tricky Trees.
He scored his second of the season a week later to open the scoring for Forest in a 3-2 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The former Union Berlin striker broke forward following a quick counterattack before slotting past Andre Onana to net for a seventh consecutive Premier League game – a club record.
Both strikes have now been nominated for Forest’s Goal of the Month alongside Chris Wood’s brilliant header against Sheffield United, Charlotte Greengrass’s goal against Stourbridge, and Detlef Esepa-Osong’s goal against Arsenal U-21.
The Nigerian International striker has started the season impressively for the former European champions, registering 3 goals and 1 assist in 4 games played so far, and maintaining his form throughout the campaign will be crucial for Forest to keep their top-flight status for another year.
He has been called up to the Super Eagles squad for their dead rubber 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Sunday.
