“Maximum commitment” – Peseiro reacts as Super Eagles trash São Tomé and Príncipe

Despite taking a paycut to stay in charge of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro was delighted with his team’s commitment last night.

Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has maintained that his team played with total commitment to winning the game against their AFCON qualifier group rivals, São Tomé and Príncipe, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles defeated the Parrots of São Tomé on a warm afternoon at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, 6-0, thanks to goals from Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, Samuel Chukwueze, and a Victor Osimhen hat-trick.

In the initial fixture, the Super Eagles trashed São Tomé and Príncipe, winning the game by a scoreline of 10-0, and with top spot in the group already secured, many suggested that the Super Eagles didn’t have much to do in terms of putting on the best performances to ensure the win.

Peseiro, who recently signed a contract that will see him take charge of the Super Eagles team at the AFCON competition in Ivory Coast at the start of next year, was delighted with the football his team put on display, and commended the teams commitment.

“Our players played with maximum commitment. They want to play for me. I assembled them to win AFCON Cup, and today, they have shown good commitment in their play,” Peseiro told the media.

The sixty-three-year-old admitted that when faced with smaller opposition, it sometimes seems natural to relax and take the foot of the gas, but his players didn’t do that. He added;

“Normally, if you play against a team that is not strong, everybody relaxes, but today they did not relax. It is a fantastic game by the players, 6-0 is very good.”

The win yesterday sealed Nigeria’s position as first in the group, meanwhile, São Tomé and Príncipe are out of contention for a place at the 2023 AFCON finals.
