Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles drop in latest FIFA ranking

Super Eagles of Nigeria will be among the 24 countries to participate in the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be played in Ivory Coast next year

Jose Peseiro’s Super Eagles of Nigeria have slipped one place in the latest FIFA rankings, falling from 39th to 40th, Soccernet.ng reports.

During this period, the Super Eagles only played a single match, where they convincingly defeated São Tomé and Príncipe with a score of 6-0 in their final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Unfortunately, this victory did not have a significant impact on their ranking.

In the African rankings, Nigeria currently holds the sixth position. Morocco claims the top spot, followed by Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt, rounding out the top five.

Looking ahead, the Eagles will embark on their journey to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup with a match against Lesotho in November.

Lesotho is currently ranked 152nd in the latest FIFA ranking. South Africa and Benin Republic, also in the same qualifying group, hold the 65th and 94th positions, respectively. Zimbabwe remains at 125, and Rwanda holds the 139th position.

In October, Peseiro’s team has a friendly match scheduled against Saudi Arabia. The Green Falcons are currently ranked 57th globally.

Argentina retains its number one spot in the rankings following two victories over Ecuador and Bolivia in the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers. France, Brazil, England, and Belgium make up the top five.

The leading countries are followed by Croatia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, and Spain, completing the top ten.

Nigeria is set to be one of the 24 participating countries in the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast next year.
