“I need to play in a big league”- Gent star Gift Orban restates desire to leave Belgium

The Super Eagles striker has been banging in goals aplenty for Gent, but he wants to leave for another club

Super Eagles striker Gift Orban has restated his desire to leave Belgian Jupiler League club Gent for one of Europe’s top five leagues, Soccernet reports.

Orban left Norwegian lower league club Stabaek for Gent in January, and he has turned out to be one of the best signings for the club. The 21-year-old has taken the club by storm, producing 26 goals and two assists in 31 appearances for the Buffalos.

Orban was key in Gent’s qualification for the Europa Conference League last season, and this season, he has kept up with the brilliant performances.

Since he joined Gent last season, the 21-year-old goal poacher has often stated his desire to move to the Premier League. He almost got his move this summer, as were talks of interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who were searching for a replacement for Harry Kane. However, the English top-flight side opted to sign Brennan Johnson instead.

Following his consistent goalscoring escapades, Orban got his maiden Super Eagles call-up last week for Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON qualifying fixture against Sao Tome and Principe on the 10th of September.

Ahead of the game, Orban has shared his excitement at getting a Super Eagles club. He also says he is looking forward to leaving Gent for a bigger club.

“I’m very happy to be here to give everything for my country. It’s very important for me,” Orban told Brila FM.

“I’m a striker, and my job is to score. In every game, I need to score. I’m in Belgium, but I need to play in a big league.”

Orban would be looking to make his national team debut on Sunday. However, he has Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen and Bayer Leverkusen starboy Victor Boniface to compete with for the striker role.
