Napoli previously posted a video on their official TikTok page, mocking Osimhen for missing a penalty kick, before deleting the video.
Former A.C. Milan forward, Antonio Cassano, has taken a dig at Napoli’s chairman, Aurelio De Laurentiis, for the way Osimhen’s case was handled, Soccernet.ng reports.
Fans all over the world were surprised to see Napoli post a video mocking the man who led the team to their first Scudetto title in over three decades, as Gli Azzuri came under scrutiny before the video was eventually taken down.
A few days later, the club released an official statement, stating that the video wasn’t posted with malicious intent, rather, was just posted to make a harmless joke, and Cassano disagrees.
The former Italy striker mentioned that the official statement released by the club was nothing close to an apology and that Osimhen had every right to be offended, despite the club’s statement saying otherwise.
“It had never happened in 40 years of football for a club to kick their own gamble for its own player for a wrong penalty, and it is even more serious that Napoli did not apologize to Osimhen, stating that he should not be offended,” as quoted by Calcionews24.
The Super Eagles striker scored twenty-six goals in the league last season but struggled for goals since the International break, before breaking the streak in Napoli’s midweek win against Udinese.
Antonio Cassano, however still feels the club should have done better to protect the 24-year-old and called on the club’s chairman to take responsibility for the chaos the video caused, or else he risks Osimhen leaving for an amount that’s way less than his value.
“De Laurentiis must take responsibility for the disaster he is causing, else it is right that the player then leaves on a free transfer at the end of the season,” the 41-year-old added.
Napoli boss, Rudi Garcia, left Osimhen on the bench for their game against Lecce, opting for the Argentine Giovanni Simeone instead.
The Frenchman looks like he’s resting the Capocannoniere award winner ahead of Napoli’s big game against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
