Coach Peseiro agrees contract extension to continue as Super Eagles head coach

Jose Peseiro has been in charge of the Super Eagles since May 2022 and has secured a ticket for Nigeria to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations taking place next year in Ivory Coast

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) and Jose Peseiro have reached an agreement for the Portuguese to continue as the head coach of the senior men’s national team of Nigeria, the Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reports.

As agreed in his previous contract signed in May 2022, Peseiro has been given the mandate to lead the Super Eagles to the next AFCON tournament starting in Ivory Coast in a few months.

The 63-year-old has guided the Super Eagles through the qualifiers and has secured the nation’s ticket to participate in the tournament with a game to spare.

His previous contract expired before the start of the 2023 AFCON because the tournament was postponed till next year.

He has now agreed to continue in the role after accepting a pay cut from his previous terms, with the new contract allowing him to also take charge of the Super Eagles B- the home-based professionals.

The new contract extension will only see the 63-year-old lead the Super Eagles through the tournament before expiring at the end of February 2024.

Following the resolution of his contract, Peseiro will now shift his attention toward ending the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with a victory against Sao Tome and Principe next Sunday. The 3-time African champions taught the minnows a football lesson in the first leg with a 10-0 hammering in Agadir, Morocco in June 2022.

With the abundant talent to call for the continental showpiece next year after the likes of Victor Boniface, Gift Orban, Victor Osimhen, Terem Moffi, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Ademola Lookman performing well for their clubs, the Portuguese tactician has enough firepower in his attacking ranks to at least lead the team to the last four of the tournament.
