Victor Boniface scored a brace last weekend in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga win against Heidenhem to help his team break an ancient record.
Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface made goal-scoring history with Bayer 04 Leverkusen after they cruised to a 4-1 win over Heidenhem, Soccernet.ng reports.
The new Leverkusen poster boy continued his blistering form, scoring two last weekend in eighty-five minutes of play, and set a new Bundesliga goal-scoring record with the Bay Arena faithful.
Die Werkself have scored seventeen goals in the league so far, from just five games, averaging 3.4 goals per game. They have also conceded just six goals, remaining solid at both ends of the pitch.
According to Leverkusen’s official website, Alonso’s men set a new record for themselves, with seventeen goals from the first five league games, a feat the club have never achieved after the first five matchdays.
Boniface has contributed to a huge chunk of those seventeen goals, scoring six, and setting up another two. The Nigerian matched Erling Haaland’s record last month after he won the Player of the Month and the Rookie of the Month award.
The Akure-born striker broke another record in his last outing with the German side. He became the first player to have the most shots(36) facing the opposition goal, after just five league games.
The record was previously held by VFL Bochum legend, Uwe Wegmann. Wegmann had 35 shots on goal from the first five league games with Die Unabsteigbaren in the 1994/95 season.
Boniface made his national team debut in Nigeria’s 6-0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe, assisting Samuel Chukwueze to score the sixth goal of the game and hopes to continue his form as Leverkusen travel to Mainz on Saturday.
The 05’ers are bottom of the league with just a point, and Leverkusen are poised to make use of the home side’s poor form to their advantage.
