The World Cup’s missing millions: Super Falcons’ FIFA payday still in limbo

In the aftermath of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has disclosed that they have not yet received the funds designated for the Super Falcons’ players from FIFA, Soccernet.ng reports.

Under the tournament’s regulations, each member of the Super Falcons’ playing squad is entitled to a $60,000 (N46 million) bonus for their impressive performance in reaching the second round of the competition, hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand.

Notably, Spain secured victory in the tournament with a solitary goal, bringing the Women’s World Cup to a close on August 20th in Sydney.

Addressing the issue of the Super Falcons’ entitlements, Ademola Olajire, the Director of Media for the NFF, clarified that the federation had settled all the players’ dues before the commencement of the World Cup.

However, the actual disbursement to the players is contingent upon FIFA releasing the designated funds, at which point the players will receive their respective bonuses.

Remarkably, Nigeria, South Africa, and Morocco all made significant strides in the World Cup, progressing beyond the group stages in a historic feat for African nations.

The Super Falcons, in particular, showcased a commendable performance, remaining undefeated in their four regulation time matches.

The team secured a thrilling victory against co-hosts Australia and drew with Olympic champions Canada, Ireland, and European champions England. However, their journey was cut short in the round of 16 following a penalty shootout loss to the Three Lionesses.
