Nottingham Forest are set to bolster their defensive options as they have agreed on a deal with World Cup-winning Argentine defender.
Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest are set to improve their options in their defensive options with the addition of Argentine full-back, Gonzalo Montiel, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Reds have agreed on a deal for the Argentine right-back and will pay Sevilla a fee within the range of nine million pounds.
The twenty-six-year-old scored the winning penalty in Qatar at the 2022 World Cup as Argentina defeated France in a frantic affair, scored a penalty to help Sevilla defeat Roma in the Europa League final, and scored another penalty in Sevilla’s UEFA Super Cup loss to Manchester City in Greece.
Montiel joined Sevilla from River Plate in 2021 and featured in seventy-two games for the Rojiblancos Sevillistas, mostly playing second fiddle to Jesus Navas at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, and as per Daily Mail, Forest have won the battle to secure the signature of the right-back, as Fulham were another side interested in the player.
Over the summer, Forest have recruited players like Anthony Elanga, Ola Aina and Matt Turner, whilst securing Chris Wood on a permanent transfer, and with Serge Aurier, Neco Williams, Giulian Biancone, Mohamed Drager and Ola Aina players that can fill into the right-back spot, Montiel’s arrival will mean huge competition for starting spots in the squad and will keep all the players on their toes, and could mean some players will be linked with a move away from the club to free up space.
Forest started the Premier League season with a defeat away to Arsenal but turned their fortunes around against Sheffield United, thanks to a late-minute winner by Chris Wood.
Sevilla on the other hand, lost to Valencia in their opening La Liga game before their Super Cup clash against City, with Gudelj missing the last penalty kick in the shootout to hand Manchester City the win.
Montiel will travel to England on Monday in order to undergo a medical with his new club.
