Nigeria-eligible midfielder set to spend time on Chelsea’s sideline after surgery

Austria-born Chelsea midfielder, who is eligible to play for England or Nigeria picked up an injury in Chelsea’s win over West Ham.

Chelsea midfielder, Carney Chukwuemeka is set to have a spell out of football after getting injured in the Blues 3-1 loss to West Ham, Soccernet.ng reports.

The nineteen-year-old midfielder went off injured after opening his Chelsea goal account, scoring a brilliant curler after dribbling past Tomáš Souček, and bending the ball past Alphonse Areola to equalize for Chelsea on the twenty-eight-minute mark, but things turned sour after he hobbled off the pitch close to the end of the first half but didn’t come on for the second half and had to be replaced by Mykhaylo Mudryk.

As per Fabrizio Romano, the midfielder underwent surgery on Monday and is set to be out of action for about six weeks.

The news comes after the midfielder posted on his Instagram page about the joy he felt when he scored his first goal for the club and the pain he felt after, tagging the pictures with the caption- “from joy to pain within minutes.”

He continued; “God, I thank you for blessing me with my first goal for Chelsea. A moment I’ve prayed so hard for and dreamt of since I was a kid. I know your plans for me are greater than mine and nobody can stop what you have already written for me this season.”

He ended the post, by thanking Chelsea fans for their support, and assured the fans that he’ll be back stronger than expected.

“Minor setback, but I will be back stronger than ever, Thank you Chelsea fans for your love and support, See you soon.”

He joins Chelsea’s list of impugned players. Reece James, and new summer signing, Christopher Nkunku are also on the list. Nkunku suffered a knee injury and will be out till December, at least. With Chukwuemeka missing six weeks, he will miss about seven Chelsea, including their Carabao Cup game against AFC Wimbledon. Wesley Fofana is also out after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament and Benoît Badiashile is still out with an injury.

Chukwuemeka was born in Austria and has represented England at youth level. However, his parents are from Nigeria, giving him the possibility of the switch to the Super Eagles.
