Lens, Middlesbrough reach N11 billion agreement for award-winning Super Eagles prospect

The former Arsenal striker had an excellent outing in the English second-tier last term and could be set for a French adventure

RC Lens and Middlesbrough FC have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of English striker Chuba Akpom, Soccernet.ng reports.

Akpom will put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the French Ligue 1 side.

According to L’Equipe, as per Les-Transferts, Lens and Middlesbrough have harmonised their positions on the transfer terms for the England-born Super Eagles hopeful.

The agreed sum for the 27-year-old’s services stands at €11 million, with a potential infusion of €2 million (approx. N11 billion in total) contingent on performance-related incentives. This arrangement underscores the unwavering resolve of both entities to navigate a seamless transition for the versatile forward.

Akpom, in the final year of his contract with Middlesbrough, finished as the best striker in the Championship last season following his incredible 28-goal haul.

Yet, despite his excellent contributions, Akpom’s endeavours fell short of securing Middlesbrough’s resurgence to the Premier League under the stewardship of manager Michael Carrick.

The leap to RC Lens is a strategic response to the French side’s desire to augment their offensive capabilities.

Lens have sanctioned the departure of Belgium international Lois Openda, who moved to RB Leipzig for a record-breaking sum of €50 million.

Akpom’s adaptability and precision in scoring goals make him a prized addition to the Lens lineup. As they brace themselves to tackle domestic and European challenges in the imminent season, his presence bolsters their competitive edge.

Arsenal-trained Akpom has previously played for clubs in England, Greece, and Belgium. This is, however, the first time he will be featuring for a French club.

Akpom won two FA Cup titles with Arsenal and lifted the Super League and Greek Cup with PAOK.
