Former Flying Eagles star on the way to Italy to join Serie A club Salernitana

The youngster would be making a major step up from Slovenia to Serie A, but it appears he has the talent to succeed anywhere

Salernitana have won the race to sign gifted forward Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi from Slovenian side Celje, Soccernet.ng reports.

As per reports from Italy, the Nigerian youngster is on the verge of joining the Italian top-flight club Salernitana.

AC Milan, Genoa, and Cagliari are some of the Italian teams linked with a move for Ikwuemesi.

Latvia giants FC Riga were also close to getting a deal done for the exciting forward before negotiations broke down.

Ikwuemesi became the toast of the biggest clubs in Europe after an impressive year in Slovenia last season.

The former Flying Eagles star scored nine goals and added five assists for Celje last term, but his excellent hold-up play and brilliant dribbles provided more highlights in many matches.

Short on attacking options ahead of the start of the Serie A, Salernitana are racing against time to have the deal for Ikwuemesi tied up.

Head coach Paulo Sousa only has Senegal forward Boulaye Dia as his main attacking threat, with the 2023/24 campaign kicking off this weekend. Their opening match is a tough-looking away tie to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

Salernitana struggled in Serie A last term, but the Garnets finished strongly to sit in the 15th position in the final standings.

Ikwuemesi has previously played for Austria’s SK Vorwärts Steyr and Slovenia’s lower league side NK Krško.

As per Transfermarkt, the youngster is valued at €500,000.
