FIFA Women’s World Cup – Supercomputer predicts winner in Nigeria vs England clash

In one of the last-16 matches of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to take on European champions England, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Three Lionesses, who boast quarter-final appearances in 1995, 2007, and 2011, are flying high as Group D winners, eager to test their mettle against Nigeria, the Group B runners-up.

So far, the Super Falcons have remained undefeated after claiming an impressive victory over co-hosts Australia and draws against Olympic champions Canada and Ireland.

This record has fueled their confidence in their offensive and defensive capabilities, instilling a belief that they can pull off an upset against the 2015 World Cup bronze medalists.

Interestingly, the former African champions are backed by history, as Nigeria have recorded two wins out of their three previous meetings with England.

However, Opta’s supercomputers have made some intriguing predictions, which will draw more smiles of approval from the English than the Nigerians.

The statistical giant has combined betting market odds and their in-house power rankings to forecast that England will beat Nigeria on Monday.

It predicts a 79.65% probability of England’s triumph over the Super Falcons in the upcoming bout.

Sarina Wiegman’s English squad has been hailed as the favourites to lift the 2023 World Cup trophy, bolstering their odds as the team to watch.

On the other hand, Nigeria’s chances of claiming the title, while still existent, are pegged at a slim 0.49%.

Among the remaining nations in the Mundial, only Switzerland, South Africa, and Morocco face slimmer odds in their quest for championship glory.

Sunday morning’s clash between the Netherlands and South Africa saw Opta’s predictions come true, with the Netherlands sealing a decisive 2-0 victory, sending South Africa out of the tournament.

It does not look good for the last of Africa’s representatives, with France boasting an 85.69% chance of beating Morocco.
