Come and get me – Ex-Super Eagles star wants to coach Belgian giants Club Brugge

The former Nigeria international spent four years with the Blue-Blacks in his playing days and dreams of returning as a coach someday

Former Super Eagles striker Joseph Akpala has expressed his ambition to coach one of Belgium’s most illustrious football clubs, Club Brugge, Soccernet.ng reports.

Akpala is currently engaged as an assistant coach with KV Kortrijk following his near two-decade-long active playing career. 

Nevertheless, his aspirations extend further, driven by his desire for greater professional heights.

Akpala’s history with Club Brugge, where he once graced the pitch and became a beloved figure among fans, underpins his affinity for the club.

During his tenure, he achieved significant success, amassing an impressive tally of 57 goals in 167 appearances across various competitions.

The 2008 Belgian First Division top scorer nurtures an unmistakable yearning to return to the Blauw-Zwart side, albeit without labeling it a dream.

He candidly shares, “I wouldn’t call it a dream, but if I ever get the chance, I would certainly be happy with it,” in an interview with Krant van West-Vlaanderen. 

What adds a layer of resonance to Akpala’s aspirations is his proximity to the Jan Breydel stadium, a mere stone’s throw from his residence.

His connection to Club Brugge transcends professional interest; it runs deep, with the Nigerian recalling instances when he actively supported the team, even attending their Champions League matches last season.

Additionally, he pursued an internship there while working towards his coaching diploma.

His sentiments regarding the club are unequivocal: “So Club Brugge obviously has a place in my heart.”

Yet, even as he nurtures ambitions of potentially returning to Club Brugge, Akpala remains genuinely content with his life at KV Kortrijk and in Belgium.

With his family by his side, he relishes the Belgian experience, stating firmly, “We are completely settled here, and we want to stay here. Belgium is my second homeland. We are a small country, but everything is perfect here.”

Akpala’s career, although marked by stints in various football clubs, also boasts a noteworthy international chapter.

Representing Nigeria, he earned nine caps and etched his name in history with a memorable goal in a 1–0 away triumph over France in Saint-Étienne in 2009.
