Naija Super 8: Make or break for NPFL Champions, but Coach Finidi remains positive

Opening day loss to Remo Stars, and a draw to new boys, Sporting Lagos F.C., has seen Enyimba on the brink of exit from the Naija Super 8.

Just less than a month after Enyimba International Football Club were confirmed League Champions, they could be facing an early exit from the Naija Super 8 tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

A loss to Remo-Stars on the opening day of the tournament, and a draw against NPFL newbies, Sporting Lagos F.C. has seen the chances of the two-time CAF Champions League winners reduce drastically, but the coach, Finidi George has remained positive, clearly stating their need to win their next game against Katsina United, whilst adding that he still wants to win the tournament.

Enyimba, in their last four games against Remo-Stars, have not won, and have been struggling in front of goal at the Naija Super 8. Prior to the tournament, they had scored eleven goals in seven games, but since the tournament started, they’ve only been able to find the back of the net once. Speaking on his team’s chances of qualification, coach Finidi told Soccernet.ng;

“Yes, I still see us going all the way, and we will give our all in that game. It might come down to the number of goals for qualification, but it is not over yet. We had chances, but we didn’t take them, and if you don’t do that, you get punished.”

Speaking on his team’s lack of goals, the coach added;

“That is football, it is about momentum. Normally, my team creates chances, but in this tournament, it has not been that way. We will see how we can get ourselves back for the last game. As a team, we always play to win. We’re not playing badly, which is a bit of a relief, but when it comes to goal-scoring it’s about momentum, but we’ll get ready for the last game.”

Enyimba take on Katsina United later today at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, and will need all three points to redeem their chances of qualification. Anything other than that, the champions will say goodbye to the Naija Super 8.
