Kenneth Omeruo: Former Chelsea defender reveals why he would retire from football

The Nigerian defender was instrumental in the Super Eagles’ recent victory over Sierra Leone, which helped the side qualify for AFCON 2023

Super Eagles star, Kelvin Omeruo, has revealed his ambitious goal before retirement, Soccernet.ng reports.

In an interview with Elegbete TV, the former Chelsea defender expressed his desire to play in a UEFA Champions League match before hanging up his boots.

Omeruo, who was signed by Chelsea in 2012 from Belgian side Standard U-19, has since been on loan to various clubs before joining CD Leganés in 2019.

Despite currently competing in the Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish league, the Nigerian remains hopeful that his club will eventually make it to the Champions League during his career.

Although he has played in competitions such as the FA Cup and EFL for Chelsea, featuring in the Champions League has eluded him thus far.

In the interview, Omeruo emphasized his determination to keep playing football until he achieves his dream of playing in the prestigious European tournament.

“Right now, I don’t have a target age. I want to play in the [UEFA] Champions League. That’s what I have said. And it will happen. If it doesn’t happen, we go dey play the football dey go till we play the Champions League [We’ll keep playing the football till we play the Champions League.” he stated.

The Nigerian defender made a move from London to CD Leganés for a fee of €5.00m, and a successful future could potentially lead him to join an even bigger club.
