‘If I believe in him’- Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant praises Mike Emenalo’s journey in football administration

Ex-Super Eagles International and former Chelsea technical director has been appointed as the director of football of the Saudi Pro League

Former Chelsea manager, Avram Grant, has attributed the high-flying career of Mike Emenalo, now the CEO of the Saudi Premier League, to his early support and belief in the Nigerian’s abilities, Soccernet.ng reports.

Emenalo’s successful football administration journey includes significant sports director roles at Chelsea FC and AS Monaco.

Grant fondly recalls being instrumental in Emenalo’s European football career when he brought him to Stamford Bridge as a scout.

The Israeli manager had previously worked with Emenalo during their time together at Maccabi in the Israeli League, where Grant even contemplated making him his assistant coach before unforeseen personal circumstances arose.

“I actually wanted him to be my assistant coach there, before he had a personal tragedy,” Grant revealed during a recent conversation with Osasu Obayiuwana.

Later, when Grant recommended Emenalo as a scout for Chelsea, he faced resistance, not because of Emenalo’s race, but due to concerns over his relative lack of experience. Grant clarified, “Not because of his colour, as many people think, but because of his lack of experience.”

However, Grant’s belief in Emenalo’s potential prevailed when Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich sought his endorsement.

Grant affirmed his confidence in Emenalo, leading to his appointment as a scout for the club. “If I believe in him, he will be brought to the club,” Grant conveyed Abramovich’s response.

Emenalo grasped the opportunity with utmost dedication and proved his worth. “Mike did a fantastic job,” Grant commended his former protégé.

Reflecting on Emenalo’s successful career, Grant stressed the significance of offering deserving individuals opportunities and their responsibility to capitalize on them. “You can give a man a chance, but he has to make the most of his opportunities,” Grant emphasized.

Avram Grant’s early backing and Roman Abramovich’s decision to bring Emenalo on board have undoubtedly shaped his prosperous journey in football administration, serving as an inspiring tale of accomplishment and resilience.
