FIFA Women’s World Cup: Randy Waldrum hails ‘Resilient’ Super Falcons after Australia shock

There were many controversies surrounding the team before the World Cup, but they have been impressive so far

Super Falcons boss Randy Waldrum has hailed the mentality of his players following their hard-fought 3-2 victory over Australia in their second game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Soccernet reports.

Nigeria were underdogs when they played Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Thursday. Despite their opening-day draw against Canada, there were still a lot of doubts about their chances against the Matildas, especially as they were hosts.

However, the Super Falcons pulled up heroics. They went a goal down late in the first half, but they quickly equalised before the break through Uchenna Kanu.

Then they put up a strong second-half performance to ensure it ended 3-2. It was the first time the Super Falcons ever came from a goal down to win a World Cup game, and Waldrum was left impressed by his players.

“The mentality of the team is incredible. It would have been easy to give up before halftime after they scored, but they responded immediately,” Waldrum told Victor Modo.

“They showed great resilience to come back and turn the game around in the second half. I just think the team has incredible spirit, and the chemistry together is unbelievable. As long as we have that, we can beat anybody.”

Nigeria will play their final group stage game against Ireland on Monday, and a draw will seal their spot in the round of 16.
