Balogun just returned to Rangers after he left the club two years ago, and Ferguson believes he would add a lot to the team
Former Scotland international Barry Ferguson believes that Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun would add a lot of experience to the Rangers team despite his age, Soccernet reports.
The 35-year-old defender just sealed a return to Rangers just two years after he left the club. Balogun spent the last two seasons at QPR, but he decided to part ways with them after his contract expired at the end of the season.
The former Scottish Premiership champions decided to move for the former Brighton man after Leon King sustained a long-term injury.
Former Scotland international Fegurson, who featured prominently for Rangers, believes Balogun would have a big effect on the team, especially because he is already used to the club.
“I think it[Balogun] is a wise signing. After Leon King was ruled out for a number of months through injury, I think Rangers have acted very quickly,” Ferguson said per Glasgow Live.
“It shows they have a different mindset now bringing Leon Balogun in.
“His experience, he’s a good defender and a real physical presence. He’s not going to play every single game.
“He’s not coming in as the number one centre-back, but I tell you what, in my eyes, he’s a brilliant back-up.
“You don’t want to go through the same problems as last year, like bringing in young Leon – which was brilliant for his career – or playing [James] Sands at centre-back, [John] Lundsram.
“If there is injuries or suspensions you now have five centre-backs. You’ve got Connor Goldson, [Ben] Davies, John Souttar, [Dujon] Sterling and now Balogun. If there is one or two injuries you’ve got real good back-ups there.”
The last time Rangers won a trophy was when Balogun was at the club. The Nigerian defender would look to bring back the club’s glory days.
