Alex Iwobi played the entirety of Everton’s Premier League games in the 2022/23 season, registering 2 goals and 7 assists
Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi says he’s anticipating a better time with Everton in the coming season far from the torrid last campaign the club escaped relegation on the last day of the season, Soccernet.ng reports
The 27-year-old, who has been with the Merseysiders since the summer of 2019, played a key role in helping them avoid demotion to the Sky Bet Championship last season.
Iwobi featured in all 41 of Everton’s competitive games during the 2022/23 campaign, racking up 11 goals involvement in the process. He also made three appearances for Nigeria to take his overall cap to 63.
Speaking at the Toffees’ pre-season camp in Lake Geneva, Switzerland, the Super Eagles talked about positive team chemistry and spirits in the camp, while also emphasizing the need for the club to seek a ‘fresh start’ from last season, where they stayed most of the campaign in the relegation zone
It’s been tough…of course, it was my first week back, he told evertonfc.com. It’s been hard, it’s been hot, it’s been humid- but those conditions will help us.
The chemistry has been very good here and it’s nice to be back. The spirit is high among us.
Obviously, as a team, we don’t want to be where we were last year. We want to improve and with the players we have, with the quality we have, we should be able to do that, Iwobi said
The Super Eagles forward also spoke that the minutes he got in Everton’s 2-1 victory over Stade Nyonnais in their first game back after the break were necessary to help him stay in proper shape ahead of the upcoming season.
He stated: I got 70 minutes in the bank [against Stade Nyonnais] but it felt like 90! No, I’m still feeling good. I felt, especially toward the end of the season, I was fit. I’ve come back and I still feel fit. I just need to make sure I maintain that, stay injury-free, and keep building.
Hopefully, it’s a promising season ahead.
Everton will play host to Fulham in their first game of the new Premier League season.
