2023 FIFA WWC: “I’m grateful”- Super Falcons World Cup starlet satisfied with Kante-like performance against Canada

The 19-year-old midfielder made her Super Falcons debut for Nigeria, and she gave a good account of herself

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has shared her elation after her superb performance for Nigeria in their 2023 Women’s World Cup opener against Canada, Soccernet reports.

Abiodun got her maiden World Cup appearance for Nigeria when they locked horns with Canada on Friday. The 19-year-old was the youngest player on the pitch, but she had a superb showing.

She did not score or assist, but her work rate in the middle of the park was clutch, as the Super Falcons were on the back foot for most of the game.

Abiodun registered seven tackles, one interception, and one blocked shot. She also won seven of her 11 ground duels.

Unfortunately for her, she got sent off in stoppage time after a poor tackle. Nonetheless, Abiodun is elated with her performance for Nigeria.

“It’s a dream come true to start in my first senior FIFA World Cup match,” Abiodun posted on her Twitter page.

“I’m happy and honoured by the privilege. A bit disappointed my debut ended the way it did. I’m sorry.

“Overall, I’m grateful for the chance and proud of my team today. Thanks for your support always.”

Abiodun will miss the Super Falcons’ second game against Australia, but she will be available for the final game against the Republic of Ireland.
