2023 FIFA WWC: Super Falcons’ objective is to surpass previous outings – former Bayelsa Queens star

The Super Falcons, who previously were shown the exit door by Germany in the 2019 World Cup, are gearing up for the 2023 World Cup tournament

Super Falcon’s Captain, Onome Ebi, has promised that the current team led by Randy Waldrum is ready to surpass Nigeria’s previous outings at the tournament, Soccernet.ng reports

With the start of the ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup fast approaching, Nigeria will compete in group B along with co-hosts Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland.

The Super Falcons have participated in all the tournament editions since its first inauguration in 1991 in China and progressed to the knock stage on two occasions.

They had the best outing in the 1999 edition when they became the first African team to reach the last eight of the competition.

Since their historical achievement in 1999, they failed to make it out of the group stage in the subsequent editions, before they reached the round of 16 four years ago.

And with the 2023 edition beginning in Australia and New Zealand in a few days, the oldest player on the team, Onome Ebi, has declared she and her teammate’s readiness to surpass the record made by the 1999 team.

Speaking at the dinner hosted for the team ahead of the competition by the Australian High Commission in Abuja, Ebi emphasized that the team was in the best shape and ready to surpass the Falcon’s quarterfinal finish in 1999

” I want to tell Nigerians, we are not just going to Australia to participate, we are going there to make a record. We are going to surpass our previous outings, and I believe by the grace of God and the handwork of my teammates, we are going to make the country proud” Ebi said in a video shared on Twitter by @Superfalconshow.

40-year-old Ebi, at the 2019 World Cup, became the first African player to play at five tournament editions, having made her debut at the 2003 edition in the USA.

The Falcons are set to embark on a two weeks camp in Australia before they start their campaign on the 21st of July.

They play their first game against Canada on the 21st of July at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, and six days later, they face Australia, and four days after, they square off against the Republic of Ireland, both matches will be played at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
