The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the only African side to have participated in every edition of the Women’s World Cup
Super Falcons captain, Onome Ebi says the team is fully prepared for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World starting in Australia and New Zealand in two days, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 40-year-old, who will be making a record sixth appearance in this year’s edition, believes the team can go further this year than their round of 16 achievements four years ago.
Ahead of their first game of the tournament against Canada on Friday, Ebi said in an interview with CAFONLINE that the team led by Randy Waldrum is ready to make history in the tournament
Our ambition, definitely is to do our best. We approach this World Cup with the mindset of performing to our utmost best and conquering. We had some disappointments at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations where we did not put our best performance.
We have the opportunity at the World Cup and we do not want to disappoint again. I have faith in my team and I like our current state of mind. The team is united and I believe we would be able to do great things at the World Cup. We are motivated and we want to hoist Nigeria’s flag to the highest point.
The ball is in our court as a player and we have to do everything to be on fire physically and mentally for this opportunity.
She also spoke about her teammate Asisat Oshoala who was injured during the last Cup of Nations but is presently in the best shape for the World Cup following an excellent season with her club
It’s a blessing to have her on this team, she’s a professional and an example for the whole team. Her performance at the club level is incredible. Many people forgot that a few months ago she was injured and today she’s up to the pitch putting up huge performances both in the local and the Champions League.
She’s one of the best players in the World and speaking to her, she’s also hugely waiting for the World Cup and has already set her target for the tournament. She is doing everything she can to be in top form.
The West African side will play their first game against Canada on Friday 21st of July, 2023 at 3:30 am Nigerian time.
