The Super Falcons of Nigeria will tackle Priestman’s ladies in their first opening games, which serves as a test for both teams who will be trying to secure a spot in the next round of the tournament.
The head coach of the Canada women’s national team, Beverly Priestman, has earlier revealed that his team are gearing up in preparation for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.
However, CBC has shed light on a challenging situation for the team as they approach their ninth World Cup campaign, with several players nursing injuries.
Among the key players currently on the path to recovery are Deanne Rose and Nichelle Prince, both of whom suffered Achilles tendon injuries in September and November respectively.
Their return to full fitness is being closely monitored, considering the significance of their roles within the team. Additionally, Desiree Scott, a three-time Olympic medallist, is undergoing rehabilitation for a knee injury that necessitated surgical intervention in late 2022.
Unfortunately, Janine Beckie, a highly regarded forward, has already been ruled out of the tournament after enduring an ACL tear in her right knee during a match in March.
Despite the challenges posed by these injuries, Bev Priestman remains cautiously optimistic about Deanne Rose’s prospects, hoping that she can successfully overcome her setback and contribute to the team’s campaign.
However, there are genuine concerns regarding the recovery timelines for veterans Desiree Scott and Nichelle Prince, whose return to peak form is crucial for the team’s success.
“Fingers crossed, touch wood, that Deanne should and could and is able to push through.” he said as quoted by CBC sports.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are set to face Canada in their opening Group B encounter on July 21, a match that will take place at the iconic Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.
This eagerly anticipated clash between two formidable teams will provide an early test for both sides in their quest for glory in the tournament.
