U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles to battle South Korea in quarterfinals

The Flying Eagles upset tournament favourites Argentina in the round of 16

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will trade tackles with South Korea in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Under 20 World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Flying Eagles defeated hosts Argentina 2-0 on Thursday in the Round of 16. Second-half goals from Rilwanu Sarki and Ibrahim Muhammad sealed the victory for Ladan Bosso’s lads.

However, they had to wait for the game between Ecuador and North Korea to know their quarterfinal opponents.

The game was played at Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades, and South Korea claimed a tough 3-2 victory. The Asians jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first 19th minute via goals from Lee Young-Jun and Bae Joon-Ho, but Justin Cuero pulled one back from the penalty spot just before the break.

Choi Seok-Hyun then scored the third for South Korea three minutes into the second half, but Gonzalez Baquero scored in the 84th minute to set up a frenetic finish. Nonetheless, South Korea managed to hold on and saw out the 3-2 victory.

Their win means that they will play Nigeria in the next round. The match will be played at Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades on Sunday.
