Super Eagles star set to return to England despite helping Serie A club avoid relegation

The Nigerian international scored his first-ever Serie A goal in the colours of the Garnets, but they have decided not to extend his loan deal

Super Eagles vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, will bid farewell to Serie A side Salernitana and return to England as his loan deal with the Italian club draws to a close on June 30, Soccernet.ng understands.

Troost-Ekong had joined Salernitana in January, with US Salernitana 1919 shelling out a sum of €500,000 to secure the services of the Nigerian international on a six-month loan.

The loan agreement included a clause that granted Salernitana the option to purchase the former Udinese star if they were suitably impressed by his performances.

Upon Troost-Ekong’s arrival at the club on January 24, Salernitana was locked in a fierce relegation battle, languishing in 16th place on the league table.

Although injuries somewhat hindered the Super Eagles defender’s impact, he made his mark, featuring in nine league matches and even scoring his maiden Serie A goal. Troost-Ekong’s decisive strike came in a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Udinese Calcio, providing Salernitana with a crucial late winner.

The Garnets ultimately secured a 15th-place finish, effectively ensuring their Serie A status for another season.

However, recent reports from Italy have indicated that Salernitana are embarking on an ambitious summer overhaul, with a massive clearout of players on the cards.

Unfortunately for Troost-Ekong, the club will not exercise their option to make his move permanent, leading to his return to Watford.

Watford finished the 2022-2023 campaign in 11th place in the 24-team Championship.

Troost-Ekong’s contract with the English club expires on June 30, 2025.
