2023 World Cup: Four interesting facts about Nigeria’s Super Falcons squad

Randy Waldrum named a 23-woman squad for the tournament, and they would be looking to do big things in Australia and New Zealand 

Last week, Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum released a 23-woman squad for the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group B of the qualifiers alongside co-hosts Australia, Canada, and Ireland. With the level of preparation the team has had they would be looking to progress past the first round and challenge some of the best teams.

Waldrum’s squad is a blend of youth and experience. Some players would be playing their first World Cup game, while some may be playing their last.

Soccernet shares five interesting facts about the Super Falcons’ squad going to the World Cup.

How many debutants?

Eleven of the 23 players will have their first FIFA World Cup experience. Glory Ogbonna, Gift Monday, Toni Payne, Rofiat Imuran, Christy Ucheibe, Tosin Demehin, Ifeoma Onumonu, Michelle Alozie, Deborah Abiodun, Jennifer Echegini and Ijeoma Okoronkwo are the debutants on the team.

Highest goalscorer on the team?

Barcelona Femeni star Asisat Oshoala is the highest goalscorer at the World Cup with two goals. She has scored in the last two editions, and she would be looking to add to her tally when the tournament kicks off in July.

Who has the most World Cup caps?

Onome Ebi is the oldest(40) and most capped player on the team. She has attended the most number of World Cups with this being her sixth. Ebi has 14 World Cup caps. She made her debut as a second-half substitute in 2003.

The youngest player on the team?

At 19 years of age, Rofiat Imuran is the youngest player on the team. She plays for Stade de Reims, and she is the likely successor when Onome Ebi retires.
