Mutiu Adepoju had a standout 1992–1993 campaign, scoring 11 goals in the Segunda División to assist Racing de Santander in their promotion to La Liga
Super Eagles legend Mutiu Adepoju lauds his countryman, Victor Osimhen, for winning the Italian Serie A for Napoli, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian forward helped the Gli Azzurri win their third scudetto title over Udinese Calcio on Thursday night, ending a 33-year wait for the Neapolitans to win the Italian Serie A.
Adepoju, who had an amazing season playing in the European League and had played in 175 games and scored 22 goals in La Liga, complimented Osimhen on his excellent season with Napoli.
In the game’s 13th minute, an unmarked Sandi Lovric gave the home side the lead in an effort to delay the Parthenopean’s championship celebration further.
After trailing down 1-0 at the interval, Napoli got a few solid tips from Luciano Spalleti, which paid off seven minutes after the game resumed when the Super Eagles star scored a vital goal from inside the box to end Napoli’s long Serie A title drought.
The former LOSC player deserved the Italian league title, according to the Super Eagles veteran, who chatted with Soccernet.ng’s chief editor, Ayomide Oguntimehin.
“It’s a great fit,” he stated. “I congratulate him. He has really done well this season and even in the previous seasons too. So i feel he deserves it [winning the Serie A title] with what he has been doing, and with what he has done for Napoli.” he continued.
Osimhen has notched 22 goals out of Napoli’s 69 goal total this season, and his contribution has been essential to Napoli’s Serie A victory.
According to the Shooting Stars icon who commented on this, Osimhen’s effort is obvious to everyone and he only merits praises.
“We have all seen his efforts for Napoli, so we just have to congratulate him, and congratulate Napoli for winning after 33 years. It’s a great fit, and I sincerely congratulate Osimhen” he added.
The Napoli attacker, who has scored a total of 15 goals in 23 appearances for the Super Eagles, has also been a key member of the team.
After barely defeating Guinea-Bissau in the second leg of their doubleheader for the Africa Cup of Nations, Jose Peseiro’s team is on track to clinch their AFCON tickets when they face Sierra Leone and São Tomé Príncipe in June.
In order for the Super Eagles team to resume its winning ways, Adepoju expressed his optimism that the former LOSC player will bring his winning mindset to the entire squad.
“If he continues this way, and continues being consistent and with the attitude he has towards this [winning the Serie A title], I think he is going to translate that to the Super Eagles, and I just hope everything works well with the Super Eagles” he said.
The Nigerian star, having equalled George Weah’s 23-year-old Serie A record, will be aiming to set a new record when his team face Fioretina and 4 other teams in their last 5 fixtures this season.
