“We can cause upsets at the World Cup” – Super Falcons

The Super Falcons have dominated Africa but they always falter on the international level

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre believes the Super Falcons can pull off some good results at the 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand Soccernet.ng reports.

Despite dominating Africa with nine Women Africa Cup of Nations titles, the Super Falcons have failed to translate their dominance to the World stage.

They have consistently wobbled and fumbled at the World Cup. The Super Falcons have only managed to reach the quarterfinals once in the 1999 edition. But since then, they have failed to replicate the same feat.

This year, the Super Falcons Falcons have been drawn with Canada, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. Nonetheless, Plumptre believes the nine-time African Champions can make a statement at the Mundial.

“We know we are obviously against good competition, and we definitely can’t look past that,” Plumptre told NFF TV.

“But I think we are in a group where people look at us as underdogs which I reallly like.

“The pressure is on the likes of Canada and Australia, but we have some amazing talents in this team, so with that, we are going to put in some fight and some decent performances. With that, I think we can cause a couple of upsets,” she added.

Nigeria have not been convincing since Randy Waldrum took charge of the team in 2020. They finished fourth at the last Womean Africa Cup of Nations- one of the worst outings by the country.

Nonetheless, Nigerians would hope that the team produces a spirited performance at the World Cup.
